The ESA is offering clinical epilepsy training observerships of 3 months duration for early career clinicians from the Asian-Oceanian Region. A number of host institutions are available throughout Australia and can offer clinical experience (as an observer), and/or training in investigational aspects of epilepsy (e.g. EEG). Academic backing from the applicant’s own institution is required. The candidate should be committed to the care of patients with epilepsy, preferably in the setting of a public hospital.
Objective: The goal of ESA Clinical Epileptology Observership is to provide visiting clinicians from resource-limited countries Asian-Oceanian Region an opportunity to observe the delivery of epilepsy care first hand in an Australian Epilepsy Centre. This learning opportunity helps clinicians refine their diagnostic skills, interpret medical data accurately, and appreciate different approaches to patient management which allow them to improve the overall epilepsy treatment and care of their patients in their own countries.
Criteria for Observership Application:
- Not in training and within 5 years of completing local Neurology training.
- Candidate must have academic support from home institution.
- Candidate must be supported by the ILAE Chapter member in country of origin.
- Candidate must be proficient in conversational English language with an assessment of English proficiency required.
- Mid-career neurologist with purpose specific goals could also be considered.
Application process
- Candidates must provide curriculum vitae including the names and contact details of two referees.
- Candidate must submit a letter of intent for scholarship. Letter of intent must include:
- The reason for the application and intended goals the applicant wishes to achieve and how the knowledge and skills acquired will contribute to the development of their own country/institution.
- The intended Australian Epilepsy Centre the applicant wishes to undertake the observership.
- The anticipated start date and duration of the observership.
- Candidates must provide supporting letter from supervisor at home institution.
- Candidates must provide supporting letter from local president of ILAE chapter.
Candidates must commence observership within 18 months of a successful application.
At the end of observership, candidates must submit ‘End of ESA Clinical Epileptology Observership’-Feedback/Evaluation Form.

Funding: Stipend of up to and not more than AUD$15000, to cover airfare, accommodation and living expense in Australia. Reimbursement of cost to applicant.
